Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
The UK government wants packaging to be designed to use less material and want to encourage the adoption of more resource efficient business models to achieve greater circularity. To achieve this, the UK government has reformed the existing producer responsibility approach used for packaging compliance and moving to extended producer responsibility (EPR).
These new requirements fall under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging and Packaging Waste) Regulations 2024.
The thresholds to be obligated:
- Large organisation: annual turnover of £2 million and supply 50 tonnes of packaging to UK market
- Small organisation: annual turnover of £1 million and supply 25 tonnes of packaging to UK market
